Understanding the Solar Spectrum



All forms of energy, including solar energy and solar radiation, can be expressed in terms of wavelength. These wavelengths are measured in nanometers. The solar spectrum refers to the bandwidth or wavelength of the sun's radiant energy reaching the earth. The shorter wavelength radiation is stronger and therefore more harmful than the longer wavelength

 



 

Ultraviolet spectrum

The wavelength band of ultraviolet light can be divided into 100 - 400 nm UVA, UVB and UVC. UVC is the most harmful and is mostly blocked by the ozone layer before reaching the surface. Most films test ultraviolet transmittance at 300-400 nm, including UVA and UVB

 

UV accounts for 40% of the causes of color fade.

Visible light spectrum


 

Infrared Spectrum

The wavelength band of infrared rays is 700-2400 nm. 53% of the solar radiation energy consists of infrared rays. It is invisible but can be felt through infrared heat
